La stagione fredda è ufficialmente iniziata!
Si è fatta attendere più del solito, si è fatta desiderare! Ma alla fine, le temperature sono calate drasticamente e la neve non ha tardato a scendere copiosa anche a bassa quota.
Siamo finalmente felici?! Assolutamente no, perchè si sa, l’essere umano non è mai soddisfatto e allora, se prima bramavamo il freddo, ora battiamo i denti e già abbiamo cominciato a fare il conto alla rovescia per l’estate 2023.
Probabilmente, l’80% di voi è già alla ricerca di una meta per la prossima stagione calda (in effetti, mancano poco più di 3 mesi!). Proprio per questo, oggi vi porto con me a scoprire una delle isole più belle e affascinanti del nostro Mar Mediterraneo: l’isola di Creta.
The cold season has officially begun!
We have waited for it so long but in the end, it arrived: the temperatures dropped drastically and the snow quickly fell even at low altitudes.
Are we finally happy?! Absolutely not, because as we know, human beings are never satisfied and so, if before we craved the cold, now we are chattering our teeth and we have already started counting down to summer 2023.
Probably, 80% of you are already looking for a destination for the next hot season. This is the reason why today I’m taking you with me to discover one of the most beautiful and fascinating islands in our Mediterranean Sea: the island of Crete.
Isola di Creta
Ancora poco frequentata dal turismo di massa (per fortuna, oserei dire), Creta è una delle numerose meraviglie appartenenti al territorio greco.
Servita da ben due aeroporti internazionali, Creta è facilmente raggiungibile da numerose città italiane.
Dopo un attento studio della vastità dell’isola, di tutto quello che ha da offrire e dei luoghi di interesse assolutamente da visitare, io e Nicola abbiamo creato un itinerario di viaggio ad hoc che ci permettesse di girarla quasi tutta in circa 8 giorni, toccando le tappe principali, immancabili in questa vacanza.
Siamo partiti da Bari e, in meno di 2 ore, siamo atterrati all’aeroporto di Chania, la seconda città più popolosa di Creta dopo la capitale Heraklion e, ritirati i bagagli, abbiamo noleggiato una Fiat 500 cabrio, fondamentale per scoprire a fondo l’isola e girarla in libertà!
Da qui, in un’oretta circa, percorrendo la strada statale panoramica, abbiamo raggiunto il primo hotel del nostro viaggio a Creta, situato sulla costa nord-occidentale, in una posizione strategica per avere ad una distanza accettabile le spiagge più belle e, nello stesso tempo, raggiungere ogni sera il centro di Chania in meno di 20 minuti.
Crete island
Still little frequented by mass tourism (fortunately, I dare say), Crete is one of the many wonders belonging to the Greek territory.
Served by two international airports, Crete is easily accessible from many Italian cities.
After a careful study of the vastness of the island, what it has to offer and the places of interest to visit absolutely, Nicola and I created a travel itinerary perfect to visit almost all of it in about 8 days, touching the main stops, unmissable on this holiday.
We departed from Bari and, in less than 2 hours, we landed at the airport of Chania, the second most populous city of Crete after the capital Heraklion and, having collected our luggage, we rented a Fiat 500 convertible, essential for fully discovering the island and roam it freely!
From here, in about an hour, along the scenic road, we reached the first hotel of our trip, located on the north-west coast, in a strategic position to have the most beautiful beaches at an acceptable distance and, at the same time, to reach the center of Chania every evening in less than 20 minutes.

Laguna di Balos
Ad un’oretta dall’hotel, si raggiunge un vero e proprio paradiso terrestre!
Balos Beach si trova nella parte più a nord-ovest dell’isola di Creta, un luogo che sembra uscita dalle pagine di National Geographic.
Qui, la sabbia è bianca e finissima, l’acqua trasparente; una laguna raggiungibile dopo 8 km di strada sterrata in auto e una lunga e ripida discesa a piedi. Ma fidatevi se vi garantisco che verrete pienamente ripagati di tanta fatica e vi sembrerà di essere arrivati sul set di “The Beach”, il film con Di Caprio.
Lungo il tragitto un po’ “movimentato”, si incontrano tantissime caprette!
4 beaches not to be missed in Crete
Balos Lagoon
An hour from the hotel, you reach a real paradise on earth!
Balos Beach is located in the northwesternmost part of the island, a place that seems to come out of the pages of National Geographic.
Here, the sand is white and very thin, the water transparent; a lagoon that can be reached after 8 km of dirt road by car and a long and steep descent on foot. But trust me if I guarantee you that you will be fully repaid for so much effort and you will feel like you have arrived on the set of “The Beach”, the movie with Di Caprio.
Along the way, you will meet many goats!
Elafonisi Beach
Sulla costa sudoccidentale dell’isola greca, sorge la splendida e ormai famosissima (ahinoi) spiaggia di Elafonisi.
Conosciuta anche come “i Caraibi del Mediterraneo”, questo lembo di sabbia bianca con sfumature rosa, frastagliato da piccole rocce, è bagnato da un’acqua cristallina che vi lascerà a bocca aperta.
In questo paradiso naturale risiede l’habitat delle tartarughe Caretta Caretta, peccato solo che il turismo eccessivo sia arrivato con tutta forza…
Elafonisi Beach
On the southwestern coast of the Greek island, stands the splendid and by now very famous (alas) Elafonisi beach.
Also known as “the Caribbean of the Mediterranean”, this strip of white sand with pink hues, indented by small rocks, is bathed by crystal clear water that will leave you speechless.
The habitat of the Caretta Caretta turtles resides in this natural heaven,
it’s just a pity that excessive tourism has arrived with full force…
Preveli Palm Beach & Forest
Spostandoci un po’ più verso il centro dell’isola, invece, si raggiunge un altro posto paradisiaco.
Puntate il navigatore verso sud e siate pronti a rimanere a bocca aperta!
Dove la stretta gola di Kourtaliotikos incontra il Mar Libico, è qui che sorge una laguna unica nel suo genere e una spiaggia di sabbia mista a ciottoli.
Un fitto palmeto fiancheggia il letto del Megalopotamos; un’atmosfera tropicale in mezzo all’arido terreno roccioso dove l’acqua del fiume erode le rocce formando una conca d’acqua dolce a pochi passi dal mare, diviso da esso solo da un lembo di sabbia.
Nelle giornate torride è davvero una goduria riscendere il fiume fino alla spiaggia, sommersi fino al petto nell’acqua fredda e dolce.
Preveli Palm Beach & Forest
Moving a little more towards the center of the island, however, we reach another heavenly place.
Point the navigator to the south and be ready to be amazed!
Where the narrow gorge of Kourtaliotikos meets the Libyan Sea,
this is where a one-of-a-kind lagoon and pebble beach are found.
A thick palm grove borders the bed of the Megalopotamos; a tropical atmosphere in the middle of the arid rocky terrain where the water of the river erodes the rocks forming a freshwater basin a few steps from the sea,
divided from it only by a strip of sand.
On hot days it is truly a pleasure to go down the river to the beach, submerged up to the chest in the cold and sweet water.
Màtala Beach
Conosciuta come la spiaggia degli Hippie, è una delle zone più alternative di Creta.
Situato sulle rive del Mar Libico, a sud-ovest di Heraklion, il villaggio di Màtala è a dir poco caratteristico e unico nel suo genere.
Una baia di sabbia e ciottoli lunga 250 metri, abbracciata da scogliere di pietra porosa erose dalle onde.
Le grotte scavate nelle pareti di calcare bianco, negli anni ’60 e ’70 sono state utilizzate come abitazioni dagli hippie.
A differenza del resto dell’isola, qui a Màtala non ci sono grandi resort di lusso per evitare di deturpare il paesaggio e il pittoresco stile del paesino.
Si trovano, invece, tanti negozietti, taverne tipiche, piccole pensioni.
Màtala Beach
Known as the Hippie beach, Màtala is one of the most alternative areas of Crete.
Located on the shores of the Libyan Sea, southwest of Heraklion,
this village is so quaint and one of a kind.
A cove of sand and pebbles 250 meters long, embraced by porous stone cliffs eroded by the waves.
The caves dug into the white limestone walls were used as homes by hippies in the ’60s and ’70s.
Unlike the rest of the island, here in Màtala there are no large luxury resorts to avoid defacing the landscape and the peculiar style of the village.
Instead, there are many small shops, typical taverns, pensions.
Alla scoperta di Chania
Tappa assolutamente immancabile se si viene a Creta è Chania.
Soprannominata la Venezia d’Oriente per il suo forte legame storico con La Serenissima, questa bellissima località si trova nella costa settentrionale dell’isola.
Capitale dal 1847 al 1972, oggi è la seconda città più grande dopo Heraklion.
Qui si possono ritrovare testimonianze di varie civiltà a partire da quella minoica, poi romana e, successivamente veneziana, genovese e ottomana.
Il centro storico è costruito attorno al porto, dove edifici veneziani e turchi si mescolano creando un ambiente unico e originale.
Discovering Chania
If you come to Crete, an absolutely unmissable stop is Chania.
Called the “Venice of the East” for its strong historical link with La Serenissima, this beautiful city is located on the northern coast of the island.
Capital from 1847 to 1972, today it is the second largest city after Heraklion.
Here you can find evidence of various civilizations starting from the Minoan, then Roman and, subsequently,
Venetian, Genoese and Ottoman.
The historic center is built around the port, where Venetian and Turkish buildings mix creating a unique and original environment.
Il Vecchio Porto
Il Vecchio Porto Veneziano è sicuramente la zona più caratteristica di Chania, ideato dall’ingegnere veneziano Michele Sammichelli. L’imponente faro all’ingresso del porto fu costruito dai veneziani e, successivamente, ristrutturato dagli egiziani.
Lungo la darsena a forma di mezza luna si trovano tantissimi bar e locali tipici dove fermarsi a sorseggiare un cocktail o gustare qualche piatto greco, deliziati dalla splendida vista.
Il mio consiglio, come sempre, è quello di inoltrarvi tra le strette viuzze, perdervi e lasciarvi trascinare dall’atmosfera super suggestiva e, con un po’ di attenzione ai portoni delle case, potrete notare ancora gli stemmi della Repubblica di Venezia.
The Old Harbor
One of the most characteristic area of Chania is certainly The Old Venetian Harbor, designed by the Venetian engineer Michele Sammichelli. The imposing lighthouse at the port entrance was built by the Venetians and later renovated by the Egyptians.
Along the half-moon-shaped dock there are many bars and typical clubs where you can stop and sip a cocktail or enjoy some Greek dishes, delighted by the splendid view.
My tip, as always, is to walk through the narrow streets, get lost and let yourself be carried away by the super suggestive atmosphere and, with a little attention to the doors of the houses, you can still notice the coats of arms of the Republic of Venice.
La piazza principale
La piazza principale Eleftherios Venizelos, un tempo era il principale luogo di incontro. Ora, al centro di essa si trova una bellissima fontana in marmo bianco circondata da negozietti e taverne che la rendono uno dei luoghi preferiti dai turisti.
Moschea dei Giannizzeri
Costeggiando le rive del Vecchio Porto, vi imbatterete in uno dei simboli più caratteristici della città cretese: la Yali Tzamisi, oggi conosciuta come la Moschea dei Giannizzeri, la più antica di Creta.
Una grande cupola dai toni rosei, circondata da tante altre piccole cupolette minori, rappresentazione di quella che all’epoca fu la potenza turca nell’isola greca.
The main square
The main square Eleftherios Venizelos was once the main meeting place. Now, in the center of it, there is a beautiful white marble fountain surrounded by small shops and taverns that make it one of the favorite places for tourists.
Mosque of the Janissaries
Along the shores of the Old Harbor, you will come across one of the most characteristic symbols of the Cretan city: the Yali Tzamisi, today known as the Mosque of the Janissaries, the oldest one in Crete.
A large dome in pink tones, surrounded by many other smaller domes, a representation of what was the Turkish power on the Greek island.
Tra storia e mitologia
Per non tralasciare nulla e per non dedicare questo viaggio solo al mare, ecco due tappe imperdibili per la cultura e la storia greca.
Palazzo di Cnosso
Il Palazzo di Cnosso sorge a circa 5 km dalla capitale ed è il sito archeologico più importante di Creta e dell’antica civiltà minoica.
Secondo la leggenda, qui si trovava il celebre Labirinto di Cnosso voluto dal re Minosse per rinchiudervi il Minotauro.
Costituiva il centro politico, religioso ed economico dell’Impero Marittimo Minoico. Con una superficie di 22.000 m², era a più piani e a pianta molto complessa e intricata.
Si pensa potesse ospitare fino a 12.000 persone e conteneva 1300 stanze, tra cui sale per il culto e per i ricevimenti, gli alloggi del re e della regina e dei funzionari dell’amministrazione.
Fu edificato sopra le rovine di un più antico palazzo del 2000 a.C. e distrutto probabilmente da un grande terremoto intorno al 1628 a.C., dovuto all’eruzione vulcanica di Santorini.
Between history and mythology
In order not to leave anything out and not to dedicate this trip only to the sea, here are two unmissable stops for Greek culture and history.
Palace of Knossos
The Palace of Knossos is located about 5 km from the capital and is the most important archaeological site of Crete and of the ancient Minoan civilization.
According to legend, here was the famous Labyrinth of Knossos wanted by King Minos to lock up the Minotaur.
This was the political, religious and economic center of the Minoan Maritime Empire. Covering an area of 22000 m², it was multi-storey and had a very complex and intricate planimetry.
It is thought to have held up to 12000 people and contained 1300 rooms, including halls for worship and receptions, living quarters for the king and queen, and administrative officials.
It was built over the ruins of an older palace from 2000 B.C. and probably destroyed by a great earthquake around 1628 B.C., due to the volcanic eruption of Santorini.
Rovine di Festo
Il Palazzo di Festo fu il secondo più importante, dopo quello di Cnosso.
A Festo regnò Radamante, il fratello minore di Minosse.
E fu qui che, durante gli scavi, ritrovarono il famoso Disco di Festo: un disco di terracotta risalente al 1700 a.C., con 241 simboli e incisioni che ancora oggi non sono stati decifrati.

Ruins of Phaistos
Phaistos Palace was the second most important, after that of Knossos.
In Phaistos reigned Radamante, the younger brother of Minos.
And it was here that, during the excavations, they found the famous Phaistos Disc: a terracotta disk dating back to 1700 B.C., with 241 symbols and engravings not yet deciphered today.
