ITA: “Nelle grotte dei Sassi si cela la capitale dei contadini,
il cuore nascosto della loro antica civiltà.
Chiunque veda Matera non può non restarne colpito
tanto è espressiva e toccante la sua dolente bellezza”
Così nel 1952 descriveva Matera Carlo Levi, uno dei tanti artisti rimasto affascinato da una città la cui straordinaria bellezza, ancora oggi, mozza il fiato ai numerosi visitatori.
Dichiarata Patrimonio Mondiale dell’Unesco, Matera è una delle città più antiche al mondo, le cui origini affondano nella preistoria.
Nucleo originario della Civita, i Sassi rappresentano la parte antica di Matera, il suo centro storico. Completamente ricavato nella roccia, esso è costituito da un insieme articolato di grotte naturali scavate nel tufo e successivamente modellate in strutture sempre più complesse.
L’architettura dei Sassi, unica al mondo, testimonia la capacità dell’uomo di vivere di ciò che la natura gli offriva e di adattarsi e integrarsi col territorio, senza violarlo.

In this way, in 1952, Carlo Levi described Matera; he was one of the many artists fascinated by a city whose extraordinary beauty, even today, is breathtaking to the numerous visitors.
Declared as World Heritage Site, Matera is one of the oldest cities in the world, whose origins lie in prehistory.
Original core of the Civita, the Stones represent the ancient part of Matera, its historic center. Completely carved into the rock, it is made by a series of natural caves dug into the tuff and then molded into increasingly complex structures.
The architecture of the Stones, unique in the world, demonstrates the ability of man to live with what nature offered him and to adapt and integrate with the territory, without violating it.
ITA: Dalla civiltà rupestre ad oggi, le grotte hanno cambiato forma per venire incontro alle esigenze dei suoi abitanti. Il sovrapporsi delle diverse trasformazioni urbane che la città ha subìto nei secoli ha creato uno scenario urbano di incomparabile fascino.
Strutture eleganti si alternano a labirinti sotterranei; passeggiando per i numerosi vicoli potrete soffermarvi a osservare ciò che resta dell’antica civiltà, le testimonianze di una vita di stenti e sofferenze ma anche di grande tenacia e maestrìa. Tra i reperti, esempio degno di nota è il sistema di canalizzazione e di raccolta delle acque piovane che dimostra come l’uomo, studiando un sistema efficiente ed ingegnoso, sia riuscito a vivere in luoghi carenti di acqua.
ENG: From rock civilization to nowadays, the caves have changed them shape to meet the needs of its residents. The overlapping of the different urban transformation that the city has undergone over the centuries has created an urban setting of incomparable charm.
Modern comfort alternate with underground labyrinths; walking through the many narrow streets you can linger to observe what remains of ancient civilizations, the testimony of a life of hardship and suffering but also of great tenacity and mastery. Among the finds, notable example is the system of sewage and rainwater collection that shows how the man, studying an efficient and ingenious system, he managed to live in places lacking of water.
ITA: Tutto è roccia a Matera…
E’ la città della Caverne, delle case contadine scavate nella roccia, delle Chiese Rupestri affrescate, delle grandi Chiese Romanico-Pugliesi e Barocche, dei Palazzotti nobiliari.
Non solo Sassi però!
Matera è immersa nella natura, con le sue riserve naturali, i parchi e le oasi protette.
E poi le Murge, altopiani carsici che arrivano fino alla Puglia.

It is the city of the Caves, the peasant houses carved into the rock, the Rock Churches frescoed, the great Romanesque churches and Baroque-Pugliese, of the noble palaces.
Not only Sassi though!
Matera is surrounded by nature, with its nature reserves, parks and wildlife sanctuaries.
And then the Murgia, karst plateaus that reach the Puglia.
ITA: Dichiarata Capitale Europea della Cultura del 2019, Matera offrirà a turisti e visitatori, nell’anno di assegnazione del titolo, un ricco programma di manifestazioni ed eventi culturali, al fine di valorizzare il patrimonio artistico e culturale di una città che per troppo tempo è stata ignorata.
ENG: European Capital of Culture 2019, Matera will offer tourists and visitors, in the year of award of the title, a rich program of cultural events, in order to enhance the artistic and cultural heritage of a city that for too long has been ignored.
ITA: Oggi la città lucana si riscatta e rivive anche nelle pellicole di numerosi registi, che trovano in questo luogo spettacolare il posto adatto per girare i loro film.
Visitare Matera con i suoi Sassi e i suoi dintorni, significa lasciarsi incantare dalla romantica e malinconica atmosfera di un capolavoro unico al mondo, dal sapore antico ma sempre nuovo.
ENG: Today, the lucan city redeems itself and also lives in the films of many directors, who find in this spectacular place the one to shoot their films.
Visiting Matera with its Stones and its surroundings, it means to be enchanted by the romantic and melancholic atmosphere of a unique masterpiece in the world, with an ancient taste but always new.
